The Humber Bridge has been chosen as the location for the first site visit of the new president of the world’s leading health and safety body.
Craig Foyle, who runs his own consultancy in North East Lincolnshire, visited the Bridge to meet staff and toured the Grade 1 listed structure as his first engagement for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Craig wanted to come to the Bridge to see the results of the latest health and safety training programme that managers have been developing and implementing in partnership with Ray Bone, Chair of IOSH’s Humber Branch, who has been advising the Bridge.
During the visit, Craig learnt about the health and safety issues which the Humber Bridge Board addresses as a 24/7 operation. He recorded a video, which has been shared on the IOSH website, as part of his inaugural message to nearly 50,000 members.
Craig said: “It is great to see positive commitment and leadership on health and safety by the senior management team, and that resources have been made readily available. The employees have seen the dedication of the management towards the issue.
“I have learnt that looking after health & safety here is not just about cars and pedestrians, but the whole estate, maintenance and engineering and the planning required. It’s a real showcase for how safety and health can be managed for businesses. It’s not just about health & safety in the classroom or the boardroom, but practically in the workplace too.”
Kevin Moore, Chief Executive of the Humber Bridge, said: “It was an honour to welcome Craig for his first engagement as President of IOSH and to show him how we manage health & safety on this very busy crossing.”
The work at the Humber Bridge will also be featured in a case study in the independent IOSH magazine, following a visit by Deputy Editor Nick Warburton this month.
