Update: Following a recent, temporary, closure (due to vandalism) the public toilets in our car parks will reopen from Saturday 23rd March.
We apologise for any inconvenience this closure may have caused and we thank you for your patience.
We have essential work taking place this week, and following the delays at the weekend we have made a number of changes to minimise the impact as much as possible.
Between 9:30am and 3:00pm on both this Wednesday and Thursday (20th and 21st March) we will need to close a lane on both the northbound and southbound sides of the bridge, between Hessle and Barton towers. The toll booths and tag lanes will be unaffected. By carrying out these works during the above times, we will be able to avoid disruption during the busiest travel times.
Also, between 8pm Friday (22nd March) and the early hours of Monday morning (25th March) we are continuing our important maintenance on some expansion joints on the Humber Bridge itself. Due to the nature of the works, there will be times during this period that require a temporary contraflow to be in place between the Toll Booths and just South of Hessle Tower.
All being well, this will complete the works on the expansion joints on the northbound side of the bridge. There will be similar works on the southbound side in the coming weeks, which we will announce nearer the time. There are no works planned to take place during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. We thank you for your continued patience over the past few months.
Please note that throughout the above works you will still be able to cross the Bridge in either direction with or without a HumberTag. However, you will need to follow the signage and adhere to all traffic management.
Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling during this time, and drive carefully through the roadworks.
This Thursday (14th March) we will be finishing our essential maintenance to replace the expansion joints on Ferriby Road Bridge.
To facilitate this, from 8pm Thursday until early Friday morning, there will be traffic management in place both northbound and southbound.
Also, between 6pm Friday (15th March) and the early hours of Monday morning (18th March) we are continuing our essential maintenance on some expansion joints on the Humber Bridge itself. Due to the nature of the works, this will require a contraflow in place between the Toll Booths and just South of Hessle Tower.
Please note that throughout these works you will still be able to cross the Bridge in either direction with or without a HumberTag. However, you will need to follow the signage and adhere to all traffic management.
These essential works are now entering their final stages and we thank you for your continued patience over the past few months.
Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling during this time, and please drive carefully through the roadworks.
Due to recent vandalism, the public toilets in our car parks unfortunately require maintenance and will be closed for a little while starting Monday 11th March 2024.
Closing the toilets is a measure of last resort, and although our Estates team has been diligently working to address these issues as they arise we need a longer period of closure to allow us to catch-up. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this causes to the many people who use our facilities in a respectful and appropriate way.
When the toilets are due to reopen, we will communicate this on our social media. If you’re planning to visit the local area in the near future, your nearest alternative facilities are Hessle Foreshore.

Free flow tolling has moved a step closer at the Humber Bridge.
The Humber Bridge Board has appointed industry-leading US company Neology to install a new
tolling system designed to improve the customer experience and revolutionise how payments are
taken.
The new system will see the bridge go fully booth-free for the first time in its 43-year history, with
payments being made through a new website and mobile app.
As part of the project, a scheme similar to Payzone will also be launched enabling people to pay cash
at key locations across the region, although cash will not be taken at the Humber Bridge or the
Humber Bridge offices.
Once completed, the new system will increase requirements for back-office staff, meaning those
currently working in the toll booths will be offered the opportunity to apply for new roles.
Richard Hannigan, Chair of the Humber Bridge Board and Deputy Leader of North Lincolnshire
Council, described the appointment of Neology as a key milestone in delivering the new toll system
project.
The multi-million pound scheme will utilise key technologies including artificial intelligence and
automatic number plate recognition, Cllr Hannigan explained, to significantly improve the user
experience.
He said: “We conducted a thorough and extensive tender process to find the right partner to provide
the new tolling system, and received some impressive bids from companies across the world.
“However, Neology’s submission stood out as the best design solution to address the needs of our
customers.
“We are very excited to see this vital project move forward as it will deliver a range of significant
improvements for motorists using the bridge, helping to bring the two sides of the estuary closer
together, and ensure that making payments is a quick, easy and painless process.
“We know these are the improvements our customers would most like to see and we’re committed
to delivering them as part of this fantastic project.”
Andrew Arundel, Chief Operating Officer of the Humber Bridge, reassured motorists that disruption
will be kept to a minimum during the installation phase of the scheme.
He said: “Currently, the project is in the design stage meaning work will not begin on site for several
months.
“When it does, understandably there will be some concern it will generate a large amount of
disruption for bridge users. Whereas this might be the case during some of the key moments in the
project, the schedule of work will be designed to keep disruption to a minimum.
“Once the work is completed, crossing the bridge will become a more pleasant experience.”
Commenting on the appointment, Luke Normington, Neology’s Senior Vice of Europe, the Middle
East and Africa (EMEA), said: “Following a highly competitive tender, which focused on technical
expertise and innovation, we are proud to have been entrusted with this project.
“Bringing our global expertise in the tolling solutions, coupled with our long-term expertise in the
UK, provides the perfect understanding of how to deliver this solution to improve the experience
of the people who travel on that bridge, every day.
“We look forward to a long and successful partnership with Andrew Arundel and the team at the
Humber Bridge.”
We are continuing the final stages of our essential maintenance to Ferriby Road Bridge this week. This is to replace the expansion joints in the carriageway on the Southbound side of the Bridge (Hessle to Barton).
To facilitate this work there will be lane closures in place Southbound. This will be happening on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11-13th January between the hours of 7pm to 6am each day (meaning these works will finish early Sunday morning).
Please note that you will still be able to cross the Bridge with or without a HumberTag, however, you will need to follow the signage and possibly pay online (www.humbertag.com).
Also, between Friday 12th January and Sunday 14th January we will be maintaining some expansion joints on the Bridge itself. There will be a lane closure northbound in place at the South end of the bridge. During this time, for the protection of the public, we will be closing the West footpath and opening the East footpath instead.
Drivers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys in order to minimise any potential disruptions.
Works of this nature are weather dependent, meaning that they may need to be cancelled and rescheduled at short notice. Should this occur, more information will be provided on our social media channels as soon as it becomes available.
