Please note that we’ll add more information regarding our New Tolling System as it becomes available.
In November 2021 we announced that in the next few years, we would be making major changes to our current tolling system with the intention of installing a whole New Tolling System (NTS). With a new system, we would be able to improve the customer experience and revolutionise how payments are taken.
The Humber Bridge Board has appointed industry-leading US company Neology to install and maintain the new tolling system.
The new system will see the bridge go fully booth-free for the first time in its 44-year history, with payments being made through a new website and mobile app, as well as over the phone.
As part of the project, those wishing to pay with cash will be able to do so via Paypoint at key locations across the region, although cash will not be taken at the Humber Bridge or the Humber Bridge offices.
Please note that the project is still ongoing. We are expecting to launch the new toll system late autumn/early winter. You can keep up to date with the latest project updates via our social media channels.
On this page, we’ll provide individual updates for what you need to do depending on whether you’re an existing HumberTag customer, you don’t have a HumberTag, or you have a concession.
Key Milestones:
- November 2021: Announcement of Humber Bridge to go booth-free
- March – April 2022: Appointment of a specialist Toll consultant.
- April – September 2022: We worked with the Toll consultant and other specialists to produce the tender documents and the search began for a suitable supplier
- January 2024: Neology appointed as Contractor to deliver New Tolling System
- March 2025: Announcement that work on free flowing tolling system is to get underway
FAQs
When does the new system go live?
We are expecting to launch the new toll system late autumn/early winter. You can keep up to date with the project via our social media pages.
Why are you doing this?
Our intention is to revolutionise how our customers cross the bridge and pay their tolls. The proposed new Free-Flow system will be quicker, more reliable, and result in a smoother overall experience. This will benefit the region by further opening it up to travel and trade.
What about the toll booth staff?
The New Tolling System will increase requirements for back-office staff, meaning those currently working in the toll booths will be offered the opportunity to apply for new roles.
Pay online? What about those without the internet?
In line with other toll crossings in England, we expect the overwhelming majority of toll payments will be done online – either through the website or the dedicated app.
As part of the project, those wishing to pay with cash will be able to do so via Paypoint at key locations across the region, although cash will not be taken at the Humber Bridge or the Humber Bridge offices.
How will the new system work?
Work on the software and all the system processes etc, along with rigorous testing, will take place over the summer and autumn. We will communicate in detail how the new system will work closer to the launch date. In the meantime, all you need to do is carry on using the bridge as you normally do.
I have a Tag Account, what happens now?
Humbertag Account holders who have tags, will have their tag deposits credited to their new account balance once the new tolling system goes Live.
Don’t worry, we will update all our customers closer to the launch of the FreeFlow system with any changes that are happening.
In the meantime keep using the bridge as normal.
I receive a Disability Exemption, what happens?
We’ll continue to offer free crossings to those who are eligible. This includes people who are disabled and in receipt of the higher rate of mobility component of the DLA or PIP (provided that they pre-register with us), patients visiting the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital (provided they register with Castle Hill), and drivers of official service vehicles.
Do I need to set up a new account?
The process around converting existing HumberTAG accounts to accounts on the new system will be communicated closer to the launch date. In the meantime, all you need to do is carry on using the bridge as you normally do.
Will the process of bringing in the new system cause disruption on the bridge?
To ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum, the majority of works will be carried out at night and no daytime lane closures are expected as a result of installing the new tolling system.
Some traffic management measures will be in place throughout the duration of the works, these are likely to include narrowing the lanes rather than closing them, to ensure traffic can keep moving. We will communicate all works and any expected impact on traffic in advance so make sure you follow our social media pages so you can keep up to date.
